Kajaanin Castle Ruins

Kajaanin Castle Ruins are one of Kajaani's most significant historical landmarks and a protected cultural heritage site. The original castle was built in the early 17th century on the rapids of the Kajaani River to control an important waterway connecting Ostrobothnia and Russian Karelia.

Commissioned by King Charles IX and constructed between 1604 and 1619, the castle served as a defensive stronghold and protected the growing town of Kajaani. The town itself was founded near the castle in 1651 by Count Per Brahe.

The castle's history took a dramatic turn during the Great Northern War in 1716, when Russian forces blew up the fortress. Afterward, stones from the castle were reused in nearby buildings, while the ruins gradually became an important historical landmark. The castle was extensively restored between 2001 and 2008.

Today, the Kajaani Castle Ruins offer a fascinating glimpse into the history of Kainuu and the centuries of events that have shaped Kajaani, right in the heart of the city.
