Bomarsund Fortress Ruins

Bomarsund Fortress Ruins are one of Åland's most significant historical landmarks and an impressive reminder of the region's military history. The fortress was built by the Russian Empire in the 19th century as part of its defensive system, intended to protect its western territories.

The fortress was short-lived, however. During the Crimean War in 1854, British and French forces attacked Bomarsund and destroyed the fortress. Today, the remaining ruins tell the story of this dramatic chapter in Åland's history.
